Planning a trip to Nelson Bay? Here are 5 things you shouldn’t miss!
1. Scuba dive with grey nurse sharks
We went to Nelson Bay specifically for what hides beneath the surface at Broughton Island. The island is a 40 minute boat ride from the main land and offers many exciting dive sites. We did North Rock and Looking Glass, where swam with grey nurse sharks, wobbegong sharks, big shoals of fish and the odd turtle. We went with Feet First Dive and had a great experience with them!
2. Check out the dunes at Birubi beach (and go for a camel ride!)
A 15 minute drive from the Nelson Bay Marina is Birubi beach. It offers stunning views of the sand dunes and you can also go for a camel ride along the beach!
3. Hike up Tomaree Mountain and enjoy the amazing views
Be sure to bring your walking shoes if you are going to Nelson Bay. We spent one morning hiking up Tomaree Mountain. The walk itself is less than 2 km, but it is a pretty steep one. Be sure to bring plenty of water, and a camera – the views are spectacular.
4. Do a whale/dolphin watching tour
We were lucky enough to see dolphins when we were heading out to Broughton Island to go scuba diving. There are plenty of local operators around, have a look at Tripadvisor to find one with good reviews. If you have not seen these amazing animals, I really recommend it!
5. Enjoy a nice dinner at the local watering hole
A big part of travelling for me is enjoying a nice meal or drink at the end of a big day. It’s the great opportunity to talk about your adventures with you travel partner/s or to meet other travellers. We stayed at the Seabreeze Hotel, which has a restaurant and bar attached to it. It’s a nice place for an afternoon drink or a delicious dinner after a day full of activities. On weekends they have live music performance including a nice Sunday session.
